CFD modelling
CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is needed where wave processes must be computed in the highest detail and in complex situations.
Typical applications are wave impacts on coastal structures (forces, overtopping, run-up), wave forces on wind turbines or offshore platforms, and the behaviour of floating and moored bodies in waves, such as ships, floating wind and floating solar. We have developed a Virtual WaveLab to simulate the most complex wave processes in high detail, using both meshless SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) models and VOF (Volume of Fluid) techniques on a fixed grid.
SPH
SPH is a Lagrangian particle method for non-hydrostatic flows. It is particularly useful where water and structure interact strongly, such as floating bodies and breaking waves. It accounts for:
- Realistic incoming wave conditions
- Wave absorption and damping
- Wave impact forces
- Floating bodies
- Forces on mooring lines
OpenFOAM
With the open-source CFD model OpenFOAM, we computed the details of wave breaking over a highly complex bathymetry. The orbital motions of the plunging breaking wave were analysed and used to support the design of a subsea rock berm.
